I don't think he's hypocritical. His feelings changed. He's never been a vengeful person. When he first woke up after being left for dead, he was hurting and angry. He wanted them to pay, to suffer. When Athena's death just made him feel worse, it put things in perspective. I think he lost his taste for vengeance because he finally allowed himself to process his feelings and reconsider what would actually make him feel better.
