I believe janus is probably already deceased since we see her being mute whilst the seagull can talk. Also the whole surreal aesthetic, that every morning her house floods maybe symbolising new souls entering? Also the girl she found that floated upwards could possibly be in a limbo between life and death and maybe by eating Janus' berries she went back to mortal world? Janus cried because she lost the soul there only to return to loneliness with no human to keep her company, but this is just my interpretation
