In the novel he does this because he thinks he have no right to take the kid out of punishment. But in his mind he also can't leave the kid alone because the kid will feel lonely (I think he experienced something like this). So in his wicked mind the best solution is to be there with the kid until the punishment completed. He doesn't care about anything else. The saddest part is that he thinks hes helping the kid
