as far as i remember, he was once locked up as well but because of his deranged mind, he didn't think of it as abuse. rather than letting the child escape he says it's better to take the "punishment" rather than escaping and getting even more punishment that's why he'll stay with the child instead—he actually thinks he's helping the kid.

Im aware of the character development in the novel, but hella confused here, like just what he was trying to achieve in that situation
