I thought it will be a fluff read. Transtion to another season is extreme. The MC had repeatedly left or pushed ML away before, the ML may have believed that holding on would only cause more pain. Instead of fighting, he chose to step back because he expected to be left again. He let him go. Then ending, haha....I guess it was happy but rushed, they met again.
