He heard Prometheus was capturing people who had survived rifts for experimentation, and LSY was the only survivor of a nasty rift. So he has been investigating Prometheus, and the novel explains it better because in that scene he actually recognized a lot of habits LSY exhibited that the kid also had, which is why he made the connection that LSY and the kid are the same. So it's about J trying to find someone from his past.
