It's definitely cultural (and I'm only joking about it being that serious of course). But it's also an acquired taste. It's very common in my coutry to drink espresso, like in Italy, but it's usually with sugar.
But imo the sugar masks the actual taste of the coffee and everything ends up tasting similar, so I started decreasing the amount of sugar until I got used to that bitterness and appreciate the different kinds of coffee. Some I still can't stand, but others taste amazing. That's why I get Luca (this ended up being way too much about coffee)

Italians take their food seriously! And I'm team Luca about the coffee/espresso. But I love their banter so much, they are so funny.
