I get the feeling that if he didn't start the rumors, he spread them. I don't remember, but I feel like they mentioned he liked to play "tricks"... and he is a bad guy now - he sent monsters after the ML, to eat him.
Oh for sure, I didn’t make that theory to give sympathy to him. He chose to continue his vendetta and bring an innocent (as far as we know) person into it . I agree with the fact that he is a villain, regardless of the past
