Why does ml need to prove to himself that they can fall in love without knowing they are both eachothers named. They're literally named studies majors (or at the very least the red haired friend is). If these universities have a named studies department surely one of the first things they would do is try to find out if the names are just placebo or if they really mean you are fated in some sort of longitudinal study just like what the ml is doing. This could all have been solved if the lazy ass named studies professors just did their job. Though it would probably be hard to get IRB approval for that study lol so maybe thats why ml has to do it himself…
