I feel like none of ts would happen if taeui only had someone in the military, that he's not always alone and get creeped on by ilay. Look at this, reread it all. He has no one on his side, no friends and no support. His uncle is an asshole who willingly throw him in the wolves because of the luck he brings. Anyway, I feel like if taeui has like group of friends or friend in the military he's always with, ilay wouldn't be around hovering him much but since taeui had no one, he's scared getting killed in there so self preservation comes first, he always acts like a friend to ilay and ilay was willingly to give it to him
