They kill, do drug and defies laws. They are selfish. That how they survive. If it story about military, yes it doesn't make sense.
People romanticize Mafia too much when it is not. If this story wasn't for you then don't read it. They are for other readers. For example, I don't read thriller and horror because I don't like it. I even avoid lots of tragedy genre unless I know that I can accept the ending.
