I think the author is just wittting from a manual; man conflicted anout living, man calls in love, man learns to love, happy ending. And done in a good way you can say, "oh I like where this is going" (like Northern Blade), but this seems too mechanical, its exactly like steps to take towards something, and too textbook.
I bet its going to be more like; towards the end, when he is fighting he is going to think about what he wants in life, and he is going to see her and their baby, and his friends (more his friends) and he is going to have a NEW impulse to live, and that is why he will survive.

At least he has such good people around, that they all told him off for her. But seriously the author is making it seem like he just goes along with everything everyone around him says when it concerns her, and his future life with her; there is no thought process where you actually see that he likes her except the typical "I like her".
