The church is trying to take control of her body (i.e. the red necklaces). However, her soul is already claimed by the grim reaper so no one else can take claim to it - which is why the necklaces keep shattering when she touches it. I believe they explain it a little more in Chapter 157-158.

...if she is that strong, did the church not tried taking her body over? Or maybe the stronger the holy power, the more impossible to possess. Or they just fail to do so, since she looks like she died young.
