Can we just give a shout out to the author for being able to recreate the immigrant school experience so accurately. As someone who, while Im not an immigrant, but have been around plenty, I've seen a lot of these things happen infront of me before. The kids will think someone being from different culture is cool and interesting, but once someone seen as a leader points how "weird" or "different" the culture is, kids will be kids and follow the leader. A lot of the time it's not their intention to be mean or rude, but if someone tells them to dislike something just because. They might push against it at first, but if they keep on being told not to like it, eventually they'll grow to not like it.
So it'll be interesting to see how they tackle this in the story. How will they communicate to the little girl that shes allowed feel pride in her culture, when everyone else is trying to tell and make her feel otherwise. Especially when she also has to learn to be mindful of an entirely new culture that she isn't very familiar with.
