I think the father wasnt inherently a bad person but he's a very bad parent. He thinks what he's doing is good for his son may be to some extent it was justifiable to survive in those environment you need to possess some sort of strength but Jinheyong is too sheltered to have that mental strength. One comment from her mother of him being an embarrassment took the light out him proves that he was just a delicate soft hearted individual. They did not let the challenges of life touch Jinheyong but they are also expecting him to be strong and only follow their command. It's frustrating to see. Yes they gave everything to him never abused him physically which is very rare in those type of households but they also didn't do anything that would contribute to his individual growth. It just made him more pessimistic. The saddest part it you can't even properly cut them off because you know it was from good intentions but it was the same thing that ate you away. I know it's a story so there are good people surrounded to Jinheyong but it's totally opposite and scary people do exploit others for selfish gain the Dad's concern is also valid the middle school friend was too good to be true but he could really be bad news and other people as well.
