Well tbh I get why he doesn't want to accept the money in such a huge sum. I can't remember if it was mentioned how much time has passed by now since the first moment they slept together but if the aren't dating for a couple of years I would also feel strange to accept such a huge amount of money. Because they are from such different backgrounds (poor/rich) there is this financial discrepancy, for one of them money doesn't has such a big meaning because he has an abundance of it, and for the other he a has to work a lot to set aside some small sum of money at all. MC probably also associates getting money in exchange for some service because he didn't get it handed down so easily, therefore he can't accept getting it without giving something back. And if someone pays thousands of dollars of debt back what kind of service can you offer in exchange to the ML that is proportional to it? If they were in longer relationship, I guess after a couple of years the money topic would already been resolved so that he wouldn't have such a problem accepting it because their love is so strong that they stayed together for such a long time and would kindly accept the help of his partner.
But for now the MC is just to inconsistently for me in his emotions: one moment he confesses multiple times to him, the other moment he hopes that he can escape this situation as quickly as possible.
Interested in the opinion of there fellow readers
As I’ve previously stated, I’m in an extremely similar situation as MC financially, minus the debt. So I think I understand MC better than anyone from a realistic standpoint. I was raised thinking that borrowing/taking money means owing something in return, and if you don’t return the favour, you’re in big shit. However, if it were my partner, and especially someone who believes money is all he has, I’d give him reassurance but also allow him to do whats comfortable. And if comfortable means helping out financially (which any partner should do if they can afford it), then I’d accept, even if it makes me anxious. I get incredibly guilty when people try to buy me things or give me money and I refused too much already.
And again, if you truly love the other person, why would you refuse everything they have and be suspicious of them? If you worry they’ll hold it against you, maybe you shouldn’t be in that relationship. Or any relationship for that matter. Even if someone isn’t like ML by being rich or such, there are many people who express their love through gifts/money. Imagine you express your love for someone by gift giving, but that person constantly turns you down because of their own pride or suspicions. It’d hurt, wouldn’t it? It’s the same as any other love language; quality time, words of affirmation, etc.
Of course, I understand that feeling of “what if they leave me and regret spending their money on me?” and whatever, way too much even, but that’s no excuse to be a horrible partner and put distance between your lover. It’s toxic and nobody likes when someone does that.
I do understand where you’re coming from, of course. However, I want to express how that mindset it damaging for not only partner, but yourself. If it’s not something you can get past, your relationships are doomed lol

gonna just yap about what pmo about this story LMAO
idk about you all, but MC pisses me off so bad. sure, ML is taking it too far, and thats inexcusable, but holy shit it really gets to a point and I can understand his frustration. hell, *I* come from a family who struggles financially, even as a 22 year old. so I can say I get why he’s so anxious about taking money, but when your LITERAL PARTNER is FULLY OFFERING, NO STRINGS ATTACHED purely because they want to support you, will be responsible, and is stubborn about it, TAKE THE DAMN HELP. I hate that pride BS. I hate taking money and gifts from people, but I at least accept it when the other person really wants to give it. Having your kindness, support, and gifts be constantly turned down does hurt. A relationship comes with transactions, thats natural. From financial support down to simple chores. All that “he wants to tie me down with his money!!” shit is so ridiculous. Like DUH, HES YOUR BOYFRIEND!!!! THAT INHERENTLY MEANS BEING TIED DOWN!!! Nobody likes being in a relationship with someone who only thinks about breaking up. If you don’t think you’ll last, why even stay in the first place? It’s insufferable. Just think about the present. Also, it’s so contradictory to worry about “being tied down” since he’s so infatuated, yet worrying he’ll dump you???? It’s so confusing dude, just pick one. This is such a hard read since they keep going back and forth over the same shit over and over and i can understand both their views to an extent, yet MC is just plain stupid. Honestly. If i were ML, i’d be pretty frustrated too atp
