I genuinely love tropes that get subverted and my absolute favourites are devious or scheming and/or scamming MCs that are so chaotically good/neutral! We need more works like this one, where we’re reading a character who wants to throw the world into chaos and anarchy, simply because they had had enough. We also need more characters that get revenge or at least wreck everything in the process of it. It’s a breath of fresh air with the saturated goody two-shoes, morally good MCs.
The slapstick comedy is another aspect I genuinely enjoy. Our MC is selfish and self-serving and it’s aiding him to get ahead in life. Oftentimes, the MCs are forced to be “good people” or what (Asian) society (since manga/manhwa/manhua/webtoons are typically produced by Asian authors) deems as “good”. We see this stark difference in how the villains are usually placed better in life - either financially or in class/status, them being selfish and being ambitious to a fault; while MCs in these genres are taken for granted because they endure the pain and harassment simply because they are “good people”. Our MC here balances being self-serving while still valuing loyalties, albeit truly weighed on how much benefit he would receive. But I believe it is a step forward in a new wave of MC characteristics that more works should embrace.
