The author ends up making Nergal as Cliff's other self or something or that he's actually Cliff but with no memories of Leon (due to whatever reason) who will later regained his memories back, regret the whole thing, and then make Leon accept him because that's his long lost lover
Of course this is just me upset at my own imagination but I'm not surprised if the author decided to pull something like this...
