I can extend grace for the idea of his human upbringing subliminally impacting him, therein instilling some humanity via osmosis? But that’s with the premise of an environment where little baby leatherface isn’t constantly exposed to ABUSE, BETRAYAL, DEVASTATION and SLAUGHTER… yeah. Probably feeds right into his apathy.
Also, objectively, dragons horde their treasures/obsessions and can withstand brutal climates. So 1) Abel being his treasure- no shit- aligns with his beast nature and 2) he knows he’ll survive whatever devastation he brings and either keep Abel alive or (worst case) wait for another reincarnation down the line.
*Special novel spoiler 3) Abel finds him mid fire and is just like “go for it”- which I love since he’s been consistent since the beginning in supporting Karas in both human and beast nature. He is the only one that sees through to Kara’s’ core and doesn’t waver in his belief.
Obvi he does say he’d prefer him NOT to burn the world down, because there’s people he cares about and things he wants to do with Karas, but he doesn’t beg or force it just waits until inevitably Karas himself decides that getting to sleep in the same bed when there’s no empty rooms in a crowded inn outweighs global destruction.*
