People pleasers are stupid. Also i think in the beginning of the story he says having no friends is more embarrassing than having bad friends.so even though he doesn't like them. He's scared of being alone and a loser

I left my friend group when I was being treated like shit in hs, I ended up finding a lifelong friend because of it and ate in a teacher’s room every day with them. It’s much harder if your school is super small tho. Still, its better to be alone than be with shitty ppl.
