Sarah and Mia (not their true names btw) went to a shopping mall together to buy some things and after that they went to another to mall to buy something to eat for dinner. Sarah texted me asking if she could borrow some money because she doesn't have enough money to pay for a fare back to the boarding house that we rented. Fortunately for her I was at a study hub that was a few blocks away from the second mall that they were at. I agreed to let her borrow some money and I walked towards the mall so that I could physically lend her the money. After handing her the money, I then walked back to return to the study hub to continue studying. At the time, I didn't mind that I am the one that walked back and forth because I was holed at the study hub for 5 hours and I wanted to walk and see the surroundings to relax my mind for a moment.
After studying a couple more hours, I called it a day and went to our boarding house. By the way, Sarah and I are roommates while Mia is in a different room and is roommates with another friend. Sarah confided with me that Mia is not a true friend because she didn't lend her money for the fare. She said that before she texted me, she asked Mia initially if she could borrow some money but Mia claimed that she doesn't have any money. Sarah kinda felt offended by Mia's reply because she saw that Mia has some money left to spare. To put some more context, we are at a city faraway from our homes and we are to be at the city for a few months to have a review for our upcoming board exam. Both Sarah and I knew that Mia's family is not doing well financially, even Mia still hasn't paid the money that she borrowed from me weeks ago, not that I mind because it's not a big amount and knowing her situation. And Sarah knew that Mia borrowed money from me and now she is offended that Mia didn't let her borrow some money. So I just replied to her that maybe there is little left to Mia's money for that week or that she is on a tight budget and she could afford to borrow someone else some money. And Sarah's response to that is, "Even still that, she should borrow some money to me if she is a true friend, like the saying goes, a friend in need is a friend indeed." I still didn't agree with her but I stayed with her, thinking maybe it would atleast lessen the hurt that she felt.
It got me thinking if is it really Mia's actions that reveals her of not being a true friend or is it Sarah not being a true friend for thinking like that?
It also got me thinking that if I stay friends with Sarah for long, in the future that we would each have our own jobs, in the instance that she would ask money from me, I would feel obliged to let her borrow money because I know what she would feel if I declined and that in turn would make me feel guilty about myself.
