I totally read that as intentional symbolism, him protecting his heart because he’s reading Shin as his vulnerability in an incredibly dangerous situation.
I believe they discussed this in earlier chapters, that’s what they are referring to with the “car” talk. Stepping up, being equals and partners, what that entails and the weight of it.

This was mostly an unserious joke, but I personally took it as Jake checking Shin's heartbeat. Whilst his eyes were telling him that Shin didn't look nervous at all, his heart knew that it WAS very stressful for Shin. He still did it because of the love and dedication he feels towards Jake.
I love how the author makes them communicate through their actions too.
