Jay was remembering when in s1 shin offered to drive for him if he ever found himself in a dangerous situation, back then shin didn't know the truth yet and jay wasn't aware of how much he loved shin (imo). I think he realized how far they have gone since then and maybe got a little comfort from that, like I doubt he ever had a partner he trusted (iirc he had once said he always worked alone)
