We dont reqlly know exactly, for now all we know is he did it to change his past and make up with his wife to prevent her from dying and also because he finds FL interesting and she could help him achieve his goal. In a sense he helped her quite a lot so far too, maybe to atone as well as make use of her too, just like she does
