I actually like this. He got his memory back gradually but was so stubborn to realize not only how he felt but they were back.
Kinda like not realizing you walked to the kitchen.
There is no real "boom" suddenly moment. It's more of a slow thing that even he didn't realize he got to the point he remembered everything. He actually has to go back and realize he knew the answer.
He was stuck in the "nuh uh" stage with his eyes closed until he has to take a look in the mirror and the sudden realization hit him
