He doesnt HAVE to stay connected to her at all. He's a full grown adult. But we see that even though he generally avoids her, he hasn't truly cut her off'
In other words, YW and SI could really avoid problems if they just communicated better. But SI is so emotionally invested yet sensitive at the same time while YW sas massive avoidant behavior.
