My understanding/interpretation of it is that the older brother was sneaking into Taerim's room to abuse him and so Taerim was trying to get money to run away, but the brother found out. It's not explained how, just that he did. The result was that the brother became obsessive about controlling Taerim.
(Per the author's words) the author deliberately doesn't explain more because the point of that relationship was to explain Taerim's emotional trauma and why he's the way he is. Author felt no need to develop that backstory further.
