I don't know if this helps but i saw somewhere that the top actually was brought in ny money ro be friends with mc and still gives his updates to his parents....so it is not a misunderstanding i guess...
I read that this has a significant miscommunication trope. To be honest, those usually ruin stories for me because the whole plot tends to revolve around keeping secrets or hiding feelings. Is this story like that? Examples of stories that were like that for me are "The Pizza Delivery Guy and the Golden Palace" and "A Strange Joke".
