I really don't think the prof was romantically involved with the past manager. Garams kind personality towards him despite him being terrible to garam reminds him of the old manager. And now that the prof is finally happy, he's starting to feel guilty about the past manager and never getting to reconcile with him since the past manager suddenly passed its eating away at him slowly.
