This was def a ride Hayden our strongest soldier coz Brett is such a stressful difficult person which is in part largely due to his upbringing but u can see his earnestness so I completely understand y that made Hayden even more desperate to love and hold on to him. Like he’d said b4 it wasn’t that Brett wasn’t capable of or believed in love but that he didn’t believe that he could live up to his own expectations of wat love was in his head. When he had that dream of giving wolf Hayden the pheasant and wolfden embraces him instead, that shit hit in the feels. And him discussing it him later in bed and irl Hayden still accepting and embracing himWat a way to express that Brett had finally found the acceptance and love he’d been searching for that even he didn’t know about. It was cute asf too. I think both Hayden and Brett are similar in the sense that they both deal with rejection in the same self isolating way but it expresses differently coz of their different backgrounds. Hayden was barely living while Brett was living large and still both were deeply dissatisfied with their lives and sought solace and or stimulation from each other tho Brett was the catalyst that pushed Hayden from slowly succumbing to the numbing rot of his life. They were both so caustic with each other at first especially Hayden which is understandable coz Brett is such an instigator and shit stirer that I sometimes wondered if they would ever reach a point where they weren’t being absolutely feral and toxic with each other. Brett convinced he doesn’t need or want affection while absolutely feening for it from the least expected place he ever thought he’d get it. He was so irritatingly adorable I wanted to smack him multiple times while reading praise jah hayden was there to do it for me
