The guy thought she was out there having seizures at the mere sight of his portrait, so it's understandable that he'd choose to stay away if he was convinced it was the best option for her sake. Now did he mess up by not sending a messenger to check up on things and verify the claims? Sure he did. But you gotta keep in mind that he wasn't hearing these things as baseless rumours, he was in direct correspondence with his BROTHER, someone whom he had no reason to doubt before, someone who should've never betrayed him in the first place. I can't ever imagine any of my siblings lying to me, much less about serious matters. So I cannot fault his character for trusting Lilius.
