I think the power was forced on Desmond too. He seemed like a solid guy before he got transformed.
Maybe the experiments were done on all of them for the Coma guy to live for a long time and beat death
Or like, because he's in coma, Desmond got desperate that he doesn't care and demanded to push the power on him cuz time getting limited
That Anya is just "failed" experiment for Desmond's mind reading stuff so they just threw her at random orphanage, but her power is late bloomer and just got develop NOW and it wasn't a fail after all?
