To be fair- mc seems like he also hates himself for using or attempting to use (depends on how it goes now that the ml caught him in the act) the long haired guy. Seeing as the mc thought to himself “if only we met in a world without the dark tide/virus”, i think its safe to say that the mc doesn’t like himself for doing this either. He’s also in a desperate situation rn it seems like, with the virus symptoms getting worse. So i think its fair to believe that the mc can’t make completely rational and wise decisions right now given his conditions. Irdk tho since its a fictional virus lol
A part of me is also feeling like the long haired dude isn’t completely oblivious to the mc’s intentions either. Since the long haired dude is also a chief (which im assuming is the same status as the ml), im inclined to believe that he’s not dense enough to completely fall for the mc’s manipulation and is able to sense a motive behind the mc’s decision. Who knows- maybe this is the long haired dudes plan to “trap” the mc and kill a virus holder? And this is the least destructive way in order to not aggravate the mc’s condition and ensure no innocent bystanders get hurt in the process of eliminating him?
