This a great example on how to build such a complex relationship, the couple is so doomed yet so made for each other. I loved the attention to detail, the political difficulties, and how they portrayed the war, even including beloved characters and people in truly precarious situations. Her relationship with Heiner, and later her participation in the war as a nurse, are very good at contrasting her development from how she started as a character, Remembering that she was indeed a girl born into wealth with her eyes covered, and that girl grows up and despite the mistreatment and the way people underestimate her, she rises up and decides to help others. I love the author's cruelty and the parallels; Catherine is a very good character to contrast with Annette, Catherine comes from a middle-class family and had a very loving husband who was expecting a child at the time of the events when Catherine's brother tries to kill Annette, leading to Her miscarriage is painful to see, the realization that her life is so messed up, especially when she knows that her family was involved in the death of one of her brothers. I feel like that scene is going to stay with me for a long time; also, the descriptions of the offspring of Annette's psyche are very well done, and Heiner's despair is so well done.
