tbh even after reading the novel, i still don’t hate Coca.
Coca and Yaba are like yin and yang. If you see one person’s viewpoint, you’re going to hate the other and vice versa. It makes sense to dislike Coca right now from just reading the manhwa because his intentions are ambiguous. However after reading everything and despite what he has done, I can’t bring myself to hate him.
They’re both victims from a young age and have grudges with each other bc of what they did to each other when they were younger. They both were desperate to escape their trapped lifestyle, doing whatever they can to get away. But despite them doing some stuff to harm the other, they also protected each other in someway in those 10 years as well.
I wish that we saw them becoming friends in the side stories but it makes sense why they didn’t. Even as they start understanding each other more, it’s hard to let go of all those grudges and negative emotions.
I guarantee you though if Coca was the mc instead of Yaba, EVERYONE would be hating on Yaba. Again they’re Yin and Yang. They may hate each other but they also complete each other. This is expanded on further when it’s revealed that Yaba has the ability to heal and kill ppl while Coca only has the ability to heal ppl. While Yaba is sending out soundwaves to kill ppl, Coca can send out sound waves to intercept that.
In the end when Yaba lost his voice, Coca lost his hearing. Yaba was traumatized and mentally unstable for ten years but when he lost his voice, he was able to slowly recover and heal. Coca was traumatized as well after the incident as children but still tried to focus on the future as he knew he couldn’t live his life in pain just bc of what pedophiles did to him. But when he lost his hearing, he lost that slight feeling of security and was becoming mentally unstable. Yaba who always had to heal his injuries naturally with the body’s limits because Coca’s sound waves didn’t work on him had his voice magically come back to him. But Coca who always was able to heal most injuries with just his voice had to get a medical procedure to recover his hearing. Despite them being opposites, they recovered from their injuries around the same timeframe.
It’s even mentioned in the novel that Coca and Yaba always focused their blames on each other instead of the perpetrators who actually did these horrible things to them. It’s very reminiscent of society where victims commonly take their anger out on each other in systems where they both are being oppressed.
God I love Coca and Yaba’s relationship so much. I wish their relationship was expanded on more in the novel. Instead we got the scenes with those leechy eunuchs who talk shit about Yaba despite Yaba doing so much for them. But it makes sense that we didn’t get much scenes between the two of them because there is so much history
