LGBTQ+ people can literally get cursed at just for existing, walking around openly, or even get cornered by people, despite living somewhere where they're legally recognized. So imagine how much harder it can be to openly come out as gay in a more conservative country like Korea.
And don't forget, the ML was literally homophobic at first. He went through character development and changed, but do you seriously think every single person around him is going to have the exact same development? People don't magically stop being homophobic just because one character did.
And a lot of homophobia isn't even based on some deep logical reason. Some people are just scared of being judged or excluded by straight people. It's stupid, obviously, but that's literally how prejudice works. You can't expect every character in the story to suddenly have the same mindset as the ML after his character development.
