I want to guess the future....
They won't return to being friends and instead revise their contract relationship. They will act as a couple and sell the story that they met in highschool, ML was in love with MC, but never pushed through, they drifted apart for years. Then when they met again in college, ML decided to pursue MC, which checks out cuz ML was really chasing MC around until the coffee incident. The story then goes that in the heat of their passion ML ended knocking MC up. He will apologize for that miscalculation and take responsibility, erasing his scum image.
MC didn't drown from that trap, and ML can get out of it. But it will be a toxic situation that they'll have to navigate since none of that was true except MC's feelings for him.
That, or MC rans away after a fight with ML, ML lashed out to that punk! He gets into deeper trouble, both their careers destroyed by that fck! (╬￣皿￣) Then they reunite after another time skip with a kid.
