Nah, my money is in the ML arranging things in a way, so that the FL comes to him of her own accord, thinking it is her own choice. Leaving Gale and all. If Gale dies, she'll never love the ML. At that point he could've just dragged her back a long time ago or right there after greeting her.
The end of the story is predetermined by the genre itself, but the way there could be something unexpected. At least there is still hope.
