I think he didn’t text her before because he thought he would still be on time, in fact, from what he said, we can assume that he went there during his class period and he assumed their mom
Would have taken over prior to his class finishing.
Also, since she is not supposed to know that he has a sister, it would be strange to text her about an unknown sister being ill suddenly. But yeah, the plot is kinda stupid
