I think the author shoot their own foot with this plot. No matter how annoying the hetero couple is they're in the right. They're trying to escape after been taking advantage by the mafia, any sane person would do the same.
Other stories save themselves from this dilemma by making the ML a walking red flag and the enemy an even bigger red flag in a powerful position in order to not be overly simpathetic.
These just feel like trying to simpatize with the head of an MLM an their right to scam housemoms.
