Manga vs Manhwa vs Manhua

YomuYomu August 14, 2026 7:34 am

Do you guys have preference?
I think among the 3. I feel like Manhwas right now are my most read but it's also because most uploads are Manhwas right?

But I feel like it's also depends on your mood type shit

Manga - a lot of poignant, sentimental
Manhua - Good at comedy, cute romance
Manhwa - good at romance, very digestible

And in terms of art style, After reading so much I think at least for me, it's obvious when it's Manhua, Manhwa, or Manga. (I mean Manga is pretty obvious 98% of the time it will be B&W)

I have a personal trinity thing (for bl)
    Manhwa, Manhua, manga
    Worldbuilding, emotions, sex

    Manhwa- world building + sex
    Manhua- world building + emotions
    Manga- sex + emotions

Me like manhwa, it’s slop but it’s my slop

    manga = manhwa >>>>>> manhua

there are mangas that have really good and unique plots, but it's balanced out by some really bland, low quality works. mangas still have a special place in my heart though, and i would always prefer reading non-bl mangas over non-bl manhwas

there are also manhwas that have really good and unique plots, and the general baseline is generally better quality than the low quality mangas even though they're formulaic and dependent on trends. but manhwas usually have a bigger fanbase with more comments and with more commenters you get more complaints or moralising, which sours my reading experience

i don't enjoy (bl) manhuas at all - i find manhua characters two dimensional and manhua plots too over the top or power fantasy-like. i also have issues with the pacing of manhuas where somehow it feels less of a story being told and more like the characters going through the motions until the next major scene. yes i've read popular manhuas like little mushroom, kiss the abyss, 10 years i loved you the most, 19 days, mo dao zu shi etc and no, they haven't changed my mind (but they did contribute to my non-preference for manhuas)

art style wise they're all good

I like manga the best. I like the common formula of 5 chapters + 1 extra that most volumes follow, with each volume having one arc. I like the going page by page instead of continuous scrolling. I also like the black and white drawings because they can be more detailed at times.
I like Manhwa second. Still quite enjoyable most of the time, but chapters often end in cliffhangers which I don't find very enjoyable.
I like Manhua last. I love 19 Days and Tamen De Gushi with all my heart, but the censorship of gay relationships in most manhua makes me sad and turned away from reading it when I know I'll never see the characters kiss in a story I read.

I guess long story short I like predictability and smut

Just like you've said it depends on the mood shit.

if ur horny and looking for short bangers then manga.
if u wanna feel like a teenager kid who wanna fantasize about puppy love then manhua.
if u want both feelings, horny then fast pace stories then manhwa.

but it depends on genres though. this is similar to the person who replied 1st.

I agree with Manhua's story not being the best and ends up quite shallow at times. That's why I do like them for their RomCom but I guess depth of emotions isn't their forte because I don't think I have any Manhua's the stuck out with me except for 10 years I loved you the most.
