I totally understand that all was going to bringen them back together but part of me really wanted them to break up for real.
After a break up getting back together is mostly very strange an weird and I'm not sure if I saw it one time with my own eyes that they were happy after it.
I don't think it impossible but for me the end felt weird, like they zombied their relationship. It felt like something got alive that shouldn't. But maybe, if I read it again after some times it will feel different.
