Damn there were times where I was about to drop but i think the story ended up redeeming itself in some ways. I liked how they provided some context and complexity to her evil bitch red head bully maid that explains her animosity towards FL but also that an explanation isn’t an excuse, and also that grief changes people (e.g. the evil maids hometown friend who gave the backstory like that evil maid used to be honest and happy person prior to her child and husbands deaths). Also, the author included realistic details about having a narc mother as a woman that would be really difficult for a person who never had to experience that would go through, such as repeated forgiveness and the tiny hope + yearning for maternal love and acceptance, even if you know that the narc parent will never change and will always use/manipulate you, feeling like you have to earn love, etc. someone once told me, “mother wounds are among the most difficult to heal”.
