Trauma unfortunately works like that. As a child instead of seeing his parent rally behind his illness and support each other they blamed his illness for their struggles and never made sure to fight were he wouldn't see them. Kids understand thins surprisingly well and he connected his families struggles with his illness.
As a kid in the same situation, not from sickness but unfortunately, if I had never communicated with my mom, I would've still think I'm a burden financially and mentally to her, to the point I used to wish everyday I didn't exist, at the ripe age of 20.
I wouldn't have did that if I had a kid but I loved and cared about my mom's opinion of me because I was a child and couldn't read someone's mind. I understand where he comes from.
