I've read the novel and have been marinating the manhwa since chap 43 last year. Where are we in the novel now?

If you are talking about "the other childhood" arc then no. We are basically one third in the story. I belive we are about to start the mermaid arc

They are skipping some things from the novel. Making Taehee's childhood a side story it's unfair but things are moving quickly. My guess is that they will try to cover the major arcs and the rest they will summarize it. If there are not breaks I suspect this will take us more than a year to finish.
Oh prepare for what's coming and grab your tissues. This was a very painful scene to read from the novel and will mark an impact for the rest of it.
