He doesn't acknowledge him as his brother in the novel he even says "why would my baby be his nephew" cause he is very strict with family relationship as you can see that's why he gets so lonely cause he doesn't feel like part of the family his only family is mom and now the baby
Okayy I get it now I haven't read the novel tbh it kinda seemed to me like he felt as if he didn't belong but was still around kinda like how you are in a crowd when your usually by yourself.

Also why couldn't he just say "it's my step-brother" instead of someone he knows there would literally be no difference.
