The people saying that are likely admiring the psychological aspect of the story, and it's unromanticized portrayal of abuse in contrast to the opposite shallow themes of the main story (this one). While you might consider the side story as 'slop', at least the plot is much more cohesive and the characters are aware of the flaws within themselves and their relationship. The story itself satirizes on that instability and toxicity. All that being said I'm sure we can all agree that the yuri sidestory is yards better than either of these two.
