Ok, after reading all in one sitting I’m pretty sure the one behind all the murders is the viscount.
First I thought it was the Emperor, but now it’s make more sense that the viscount who wants his son inherit the Dukedom don’t want Richard to have children. First he tried to kill Richard and his Father because he didn’t want the uncle to be adopted and be the one to become duke, but then Richad survived the “accident”, then when he was able to become the duke by marrying the first wife the viscount (remember that because of the bad weather Richards and Her families had to stay a few days, so he was in the state) decide to kill her to get that support out of the way but her parents ended up still supporting Richard. And he most likely was even more upset because the first wife wanted to make the uncle (griss something (?) I forgot his name already) the actual duke, he clearly hate his younger brother to hell and beyond.
Then with the other two wife’s, he kill them sneakily too so Richard can’t have a child to inherit the dukedom and try to make him make the viscount son (Richard nephew I suppose) the new duke.

I even think that he may have a hand in the deteriorating mental condition of Richard stepmother, she didn’t hate Richard, she was in an awful marriage with no love and raising the child of his husband mistress. Like that have to be horrible for anyone mental state and I’m sure the viscount wanted to make her get to the point to want to kill Richard, taking him out of the way and making the point that his brother wasn’t able to keep being the duke so the king could take away his title of duke and giving the dukedom to the next of kin that was the viscount. But, the plan didn’t work out cause she ended killing herself first than hurting the child.
That’s my take on this story!
