I believe there's a similar one with gifting watches. It's a death omen or something of that nature, so ppl will do the same thing and give the person money so it's like a purchase and not a gift. Just something I've heard about in passing though so my facts might not be on point.
oh! i didn't know that superstition is known in korea too lol. i recently gifted my sister a pair of shoes and I was wondering why our mom insisted that my sister give me cash in return. 'kinda like I owe her money so she has to come back to me or something like that
