Yeah, most ppl don't gaf about a rat, just like most ppl don't gaf about the chicken they ate for dinner. That's not exactly some shocking revelation. It's a dog-eat-dog world, and animals eating other animals is part of nature. That doesn't mean ppl condone animal abuse, testing or lack empathy toward animals altogether. Ppl can have empathy for cats, dogs, etc. without extending that same emotional concern to rats.

My point was that ppl don't have to feel the same emotional concern for every species, and that's not automatically some moral failure or “double standard” that needs correcting. Ppl naturally have more empathy for some animals than others, and sometimes there are actual practical reasons for it. Rats can literally be invasive and destructive to ecosystems, so controlling their populations can be necessary to protect other animals and the environment.
That's why “everyone should have equal empathy towards every sentient being” isn't as simple as u make it sound. Empathy is a feeling, not an environmental management strategy. U can care about animal welfare while still recognizing that some animals need to be controlled or killed in certain circumstances. The world isn't some flowery paradise where having equal empathy for every sentient being automatically makes everything better. Nature and ecosystems are annoyingly complicated like that.
And the “animals eat animals” thing wasn't me saying “they do it, so humans can do whatever they want.” I was making the point that the natural world doesn't operate on equal concern for every sentient being.
